How to plan a vacation to Las Vegas?

It’s your first time in Vegas and you want to make sure you have a great vacation. Planning your Vegas trip can be important: here is a step-by-step guide to help you do that, which includes tips to save money.

So you’re going to Las Vegas!  It’s your first time and you want some help to plan a dream vacation, or a dream short-trip. This is the page for you (we hope!).

First of all, you have to decide whether you want a package which includes flights or one which excludes flights. In our experience, we have found it cheaper to book flights and hotels separately; this is especially true of US residents (since domestic US flights are usually cheap); for people coming from abroad, it really depends on which country you will be flying from.  For example, Canadian residents pay amongst the highest airport taxes in the world and for them it’s a challenge to find cheap flights, because no matter how cheap they are, a huge some in airport taxes is added on top.  The UK is another country from which it’s expensive to fly to Vegas;  if you are amongst those suffering from high airport taxes, all is not lost:  if you go to dedicated sights such as (our favorite) or (or even Expedia or Travelocity), you should be able to find a good deal. If you can, always opt for 'flexible dates' so that you can book the cheapest set of dates.  Occasionally also has some good deals, especially if you opt for ‘flexible dates’, but lately we’ve seen fewer and fewer on this website.

You have to dedicate about one day to this, so do your math, write down various prices and options, and choose the cheapest or the best for you. See what you get if you combine the resort and what deal you find if you book flights only. Write it down and then compare it to the resort deals you can find separately (read the rest of this page for those).

We love to book our Vegas resort/s separately because we know how to get the best deals and we found that by adding flights you almost never get such a good deal, for many reasons. So, how to go about booking your Vegas hotel or resort (or at least finding a good deal) separately from the flight?

If it's your first time in Vegas, namely if you don’t have a players card from the many resorts (if you want to know more about this there is a section on this page) there are many ways to find good hotel deals in Vegas. We explain this in detail on HOW TO FIND GOOD HOTEL DEALS IN VEGAS. In summary, one of the best ways is to go to fatwallet (on your search engine type fatwallet las vegas hotel deals) and make sure you find the LATEST THREAD. There you will find many codes which will slash your hotel rate on any hotel. Once you get the code, you can click the link to the resort website or go to it directly and type the code yourself, to get the rate promoted with that code. This is explained on the section ‘Promotions Codes’ of our page How to Get Free Stuff in Vegas.

Before you book your Vegas hotel or resort, you could write down what you want from this vacation, what your priorities are, such as (for example) a great hotel room, or a great buffet, or a great pool, or a great casino, or a specific location, or the cheapest rate and so on, and find out as much as you can about the various resorts you are considering. It can actually be fun work and in the end, if you do it right, you will save a bundle. You may find our section BEST OF VEGAS helpful in this pursuit.
